In a recent episode of Minnesota Camper, John Hanson from Hilltop Camper and RV welcomed solar expert Stephen Clifton from Renogy for an in-depth Q&A on solar energy for RVs. With nearly a decade at Renogy and a passion for educating dealers and RV owners alike, Clifton offered practical insights into how solar technology is transforming life on the road.

Understanding the Basics

Solar technology can be overwhelming, especially for RV newcomers. Clifton emphasized that expectations are key: “One solar panel won’t power your air conditioner in the desert,” he noted. Instead, a full off-grid setup requires a battery bank, efficient charging sources, and ideally multiple solar panels.

Renogy’s approach includes three main charging sources: rooftop solar, DC-to-DC chargers (which utilize your vehicle’s alternator while driving), and inverter chargers (when connected to shore power). “The battery bank is the heart and soul of an off-grid system,” Clifton explained.

New Tech Making a Difference

Among the advancements discussed was Renogy’s new bifacial solar panels, which collect sunlight from both sides, increasing energy capture without significantly increasing cost or space. Clifton also introduced shadow flux panels, which maintain power output even when partially shaded, a common problem at campsites.

Another exciting innovation is the solar blanket, a portable, foldable solar panel perfect for campers who prefer shade. “You can deploy it 20 feet away from your RV and chase the sun,” Clifton said.

DIY or Pro Install?

While DIY installations are possible for experienced van builders, most RV owners will benefit from professional help. Hilltop’s technicians, especially Chris in Fridley, are highly trained and trusted by Renogy for quality installs and customer support.

Maximizing Solar at Campgrounds

To get the most from your setup, Clifton recommends regular cleaning of your panels, avoiding shaded areas when possible, and supplementing rooftop systems with portable panels when needed. Snow, bird droppings, and grime can drastically reduce panel efficiency.

Looking Ahead

The future of RV solar is smaller, lighter, and smarter. From lithium solid-state batteries to high-frequency inverters, Renogy continues to innovate with compact, powerful solutions designed for modern mobile living.
